How do I find out the character/word count?

In Microsoft Word:

  1. Open your document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Click the “Review” tab on the ribbon at the top.
  3. In the left-most section, “Proofing,” click the “Word Count” icon.
  4. A pop-up window will appear showing the total number of pages, words, characters (with and without spaces), paragraphs, and lines.

Tip: If you only want the count for a specific section (e.g. just the main text, excluding references), highlight that section first — the same Word Count window will then show the count for just the selected text, alongside the total.

In Google Docs:

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Click “Tools” in the menu bar.
  3. Select “Word count” from the dropdown (or use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows / Cmd+Shift+C on Mac).
  4. A pop-up window will appear showing word count, page count, and character count (with and without spaces).

  • A link to the publisher’s/journal’s official style guide
  • A university thesis/dissertation formatting manual (PDF)
  • A specific citation style (APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago, Harvard, Vancouver, etc.)
  • A sample formatted document or template from your institution

Once we have that, we’ll match margins, spacing, headings, citation style, reference list formatting, and any other structural requirements exactly.
